Cuz We Said So 02.25.08 [Unedited]

Thanks a million to Mike from YUME and my dude 8th [a..k.a Love, Money and Music] for stopping by the show this week. I definitely appreciate the support.

Here's the upload for Monday's show; unedited once again. I mentioned before that editing is a time consuming process but I also started thinking, if I clean up all the shows before you guys can hear 'em, I'm limiting the constructive criticism. Soooo...

Cuz We Said So, 02.25.08

Til next week, Stay True...

Ok Janet!

Lol I caught one or two of these spoofs while watching MTB4 Monday night. Janet Jackson is pretty funny, B. The last joint was especially entertaining. Enjoy...

More Upcoming Events

Here is some additional concert information. To purchase tickets for either show, visit www.highlineballroom.com for additional information.

Bilal will be at Highline Ballroom on Sunday March 8th at 9pm. Tickets are $25 in advance and $28 at the door.

Chrisette Michele will also be at Highline on Sunday February 24th at 8pm. Tickets are $25.

In Theaters This Weekend...

Considering the December-esque blizzard, catching a flick might be your safest bet for the weekend. There's actually a lot of new stuff out right now but here are some joints I'm co-signing...

Opening Tonight:

Forest Whitaker, Dennis Quaid, William Hurt, Matthew Fox and more. I've been waiting on this one for a minute. I'm checking it out tomorrow with TrafZilla. Hopefully it doesn't disappoint.

I'm not expecting much from this flick aside from some laughs but I dig Jack Black, I love Mos Def and Danny Glover's been dope since Sealy almost cut him with the razor on the porch, so they may just surprise us with this one.

From Last Week:

The sequel to Step Up. As anti-dance movie as I am, I'm hearing really good things about this damn movie. So I guess it's only fair that I give it some play.
"It's not where you're from. It's where you're at."
Lmao, sorry - but it tickles me.

I heard from a good friend this wasn't all it was cracked up to be but it still looks like it's worth checking out in my opinion. From the director of The Bourne Identity and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, it may just be worth the $7835433247 movie ticket. That's how much movies cost in NYC [for the privileged outta towners who aren't in the know].

FYI - For all my Harrison Ford fans, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is coming soon. Check out the trailer ---> here<---.

Enjoy!

Got Em!

Listen - don't let me catch you slippin got dammit!

Thanks to Nia for sending this one in. Someone might wanna check my dudes pulse. He looks a bit lifeless.

Word to the wise; I'm watchin' you ...

Upcoming Events

Greetings fellow music lovers! Of course we had to provide you with some dope upcoming concerts...we got ya'll covered. Thank us later :)

Alice Smith will be performing early-March in NYC and Philly. For those of you who aren't familiar, this amazing songstress (who ranges from three to five pitches) has generated quite an indie buzz. Her debut album For Lovers, Dreamers and Me was released last fall and is heavy on my ipod right now. (My apologies to my fellow subway riders who have had to hear Love Endeavor on repeat) Compared to the likes of Norah Jones, Jill Scott and Nina Simone, the best thing about Ms. Smith is that she is none of the above. Her sound fuses almost every genre imaginable. Peep the concert info below.

Philadelphia Tin Angel
Thursday March 6th @ 8:30pm
$20

New York City Highline Ballroom
Friday March 7th @ 9:00pm
$15
Raheem DeVaughn is back with his sophomore album, Love Behind The Melody. Another one of my favorites. This dude is soulful and has great songwriting skills. And I am sure many of you have been caught at the office chanting his latest single Woman at your desk, complete with matching head-bob. After his debut last year with The Love Experience, I have been hooked. Enjoy the live experience. Concert info below:

New York City

BB King Blues Club and Grill

Monday March 10th @ 8:00pm

$21.50

Go to http://www.ticketmaster.com/ to pick up tickets to any of the concerts mentioned above.

And now for my Free 99 lovers, definitely hit up the upcoming FREE neo-soul concert at Long Island University. The concert is co-sponsored by Kumble Theatre with contributions from YUME (see more on YUME below), and music includes Eric Roberson, Heavy, the Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble and Deemi. Check out the flyer below.

Don't Propose In Public!!!

I'm sayin, is it too much to ask for her to say "yes" just because THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING? Tell a brotha how you really feel when the cameras are off.

Cuz We Said So 02.18.08 Upload [Unedited]

So - I'm back in town which meannnns, the show is right back with me =). Yesterday was a pretty successful broadcast. Thanks so much to everyone who tuned in. Your support and feedback makes me better.

For those of you who missed out [or those who caught it and just wanna listen for a 2nd time], here's the upload for yesterday's show. This is the unedited version of the show. Editing throughout the week takes a bit of time considering the hecticness [just made that up] of my schedule so - I figured I'd present the show to you, 'flaws and all.'

Please note: The upload link will expire after two weeks. You have until Tuesday, March 4 to download this week's show.

Reflections: African-American Leaders Past and Present

In honor of Black History Month and the historical presidential campaign of 2008, this is an apropos post about a pair of beneficial leaders of past and present.

Malcolm X - Known for his leadership of the Nation of Islam and his "by any means necessary" stance on civil rights, Brother Malcolm embodied personable and charismatic leadership. His daring speeches and relatable past sparked quick attention within the Muslim and Black communities. His call for action was heard everywhere - in the homes of Blacks and Whites. And, when he boldly severed ties with the Nation of Islam in 1964 because of a change in belief, he was not afraid to speak publicly about his choice. Malcolm X's legacy can be marked by its integrity; in the world of politics where details are usually suppressed and altered, he was never afraid to be an open book.

Suggested Readings:

Barack Obama - Many people never thought they would live to see a Black president of the United States of America. Despite the taboo, Barack Obama is willing to take a chance. The Illinois junior senator has led an extraordinary campaign for the president against fellow Democrat Hilary Clinton. Barack has been able to do what was otherwise unthinkable; he has unified thousands of Blacks, Whites, and Hispanics with his campaign of change and hope. Many can see themselves in this fiery young leader from humble beginnings. He is black, he is white, and he is a tangible part of our goal for unification.

Do You Know YUME?

About 2 - 3 weeks ago, I met this dude named Mike. Mike comes off as a realllllly laid-back dude, friendly, super down-to-Earth; an all-around good guy. He manages this "loft-tique" in Crown Heights called YUME. I don't know why it took me so long to write about this place but I featured it on last week's show. Listen to me! This place is the SPOT. Dope clothes, amazing artwork and a genuine community vibe. I could go on for days but seeing is believing. Observe...

If you're ever in the area, stop by. Hell, even if you're nowhere near the area, alter your path and head over to YUME. The dream is real.

Cuz We Said So Will Return Next Monday, February 18!

So I'm finally somewhere sitting still with my trusty laptop and a consistent internet connection.

Today's show was canceled unfortunately due to travel discrepancies. I was stuck outta town and my rescheduled flight didn't get me into the city until 1PM. =/. The friendly skies aren't so friendly all the time. Ish happens though, right? Si.

Anyway, I hope you all had a great weekend. I made it made it back just in time to head to my dentist and finish off Part II of a root canal. Definitely not my idea of sexual seduction.

Moving along...I had a ridiculously fantastic show lined up for you guys today but no worries - next Monday, me and special guest Cartier will be in attendance. Count on it. I've got some new music [shout-out to my man Steve] to drop on your ears. You'll love me forever when I bless you with the gems I'm holding onto. Trust me!

Next Monday - Lock IN!

Stay True...

Friday, February 8, 2008

Cartier is What They Call Him...

He sings, he writes, he acts, he dances [and I don't mean chicken noodling and pop lockin', the boy gets his Sammy Davis Jr. on!] and he'll be featured in the up & coming segment of Monday's show. Do your research. This young man definitely has the potential to make some noise in the game. I hope your ears are ready...

CARTIER

P.S - I left out the part about him being handsome because...well, isn't it obvious?

Tune in Monday folks! It's a gooooood look baby!

Crassie

My eyes hurt. Note to Cassie (and self, and readers, and all living things who dress themselves): do NOT leave the house dressed like this. Matching gone bad people - not a good look. Cassie attempted to pull off this crass little number - surprisingly, she wasn't on her way to the set of What Not To Wear. Shocking.

So let's review: matching = a good look.
Overmatching = a hood look, believe me -_-

Can I Get A Woo Woo?

Smh Hyph sent me this MONTHS ago and it's old as crap but dammit, it's funny as f$%k! Until you realize that you're laughing at yourself. Interesting how the media always interviews those who don't belong on tv. I'm ringing the alarm on the person[s] responsible for the interview and the Woo Woo Crew. Cali, what's good B?

More Players For the Roster...

Meet TraffZilla [yes, that's one word]. It's only right that this blogamajig includes a male perspective so - he shall be the spokesperson. He and I are like twins, but not. Love this dude like a brother nonetheless. By far, one of the brightest people I know. A master at thinking outside of the box. Speaking of boxes, if you go up to to the boom box at the top at select the "Cuz We Said So Theme Song," you can enjoy his accent. Yup - he's responsible for the theme. Kudos to St. Louis.

Welcome aboard Traff. BANG!

Ladies, please keep your hands inside the ride.

Shaq Attack...in Phoenix??

Sports journalists and basketball fans are buzzing about the potential Shaquille O'Neal-Shawn Marion trade. Though the trade is still rumored, Shaq has plenty of motivation to jump the Miami Heat ship: the Heat have lost 19 of their last 20 games, and possess the NBA's worst record (9-37). Shaq has averaged 14.2 points this year, a career low. The current state of the Heat doesn't reflect the recent 2006 Championship win, and Shaq has said that his goal is to win one more championship before he retires. To keep it funky, that ain't happening with the Heat! (I'm just saying) Shawn Marion asked for a trade from the Suns before the season began, so this looks like a win-win for both parties.

Still not sure how I feel about it though...

New Additions to the Team

Class...please welcome Nickey-Ann as a contributor to the blog. I know her as Nick or N Hyphen but ummm, you can't call her that. Nickey-Ann, please. Thanks. All I'm asking you to do is respect the hyphenage! [Fabricated words will appear often, you've been warned].

Anywho - Nick is dope. Fashion savvy, closet jock, witty, sophisticated, college educated, well-rounded and open-minded; perfect! We don't do conformity over in these parts. The biggest reason she's on board is because she agreed to write for free, jk. She'll be enlightening us all with insightful posts that delve in just about every realm from sports to politics so be on the look out and don't be afraid to make yourself her sponge.

[That sounds kinda sexual but it's not. Be a platonic sponge. Thanks.]

Bzzzzzzzzzz! Get em Kim! =/. At least she's still got it lyrically. I'm not too sure where it went physically though...

We're interested in playing your material on air and featuring you in the weekly 'Up & Coming' segment. Please bear in mind - we're looking for QUALITY music. All submissions will get a response so don't worry about sending material in and being ignored. We got you on the feedback! Material is reviewed every Thursday and responded to by Saturday.

If we're interested, we will select 1 of the tracks to play on air. ONE track.

Holley Monelle

Happy Super Tuesday!

I couldn't have picked a better day to get the ball rolling on this blog. A day millions could never fathom is finally here! How 'bout them candidate options?

GO OUT AND VOTE TODAY!

The polls are open 'til 9PM; make it happen champ!

By the way - I'm Holley Monelle, captain of this blog ship and host of 'Cuz We Said So' - a Brooklyn College based radio show that airs every Monday from 9-noon. All the show details are in the header.

What should you expect? Lol - I could go on for days but I'm attempting to kick my "wordy" habit so what I will say is this - the show is broken down into 5 segments:

- Word on the Street
- Weekend Review
- Up & Coming
- Ring the Alarm
- Question of the Day

So, throughout the week, expect a little something from one or all of those sub-divisions. Stick around, I got you covered.

Be Blessed.

P.S - Play Mega-Millions today too! If you win, split it with me! If I win, I'll split it with me too =).
